- D’Orsogna’s products do not pose any health risk to consumers and they can be bought with confidence. Properly heated and processed pork products, like D’Orsogna’s, do not pose any risk of swine flu virus.
- The pork industry finds itself in a public relations problem that is not of its own making, and in reality has nothing to do with pigs, swine flu is a pig/pork problem in name only. It could have just as easily been called the Mexican flu.
- The World Health Organisation says the swine flu strain first found in Mexico is a mutation of former viruses and has not been previously detected in pigs or humans. The flu contains avian and human components and no pig has been found ill with the disease.
- The United States Centres for Disease Control (CDC) released the following statement:
“Swine influenza viruses are not spread by food. You cannot get swine influenza virus from eating pork or pork products. Eating properly handled and cooked pork products is safe.”
- Pigs are not a threat to humans. The US Centres for Disease Control said it has found no evidence to indicate that any of the illnesses resulted from contact with pigs.
- Consumers should continue to use normal safe handling practices.
